The five-sheath (Pañcakosha) model is described in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad, which presents the
human being as a layered whole—physical (Annamaya) , energetic(Pranmaya), mental–
emotional(Manomaya), intellectual (Vijnanmaya), and blissful.(Anandmaya) According to this
vision, imbalance or disharmony in any one sheath influences the others, giving rise to distress at
the level of body, mind, or experience. Healing, therefore, is not merely symptomatic but
integrative, requiring attention to all layers of being. This understanding forms the philosophical
basis for Panchakosha Yoga, where balance is restored by nourishing each sheath appropriately
rather than addressing one level in isolation.
